Giving the WORLD a fighting chance.

It’s 2010! Happy New Year from London!

After a very long hiatus spent working on different projects and thinking of ways to make my blog more meaningful, I am finally returning to the land of bloggers. I have expanded my knowledge on various topics, watched numerous documentaries highlighting social issues, and I am now more passionate than ever!

The details will be for another post, for now I just want to wish you all a Happy New Year from London!

Mark Sanford: The Gift That Keeps On Giving!

I was going to write a fairly long post about the adventures of Mark Sanford, the South Carolina governor who abandoned his office and home, without any prior notice, for a sexcapade with his Argentinian mistress in Buenos Aires.

I was going to, but after watching The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Jon gave me the perfect quote.

It goes something like this: “Mark Sanford, another one of those politicians with a conservative brain and a liberal penis.”

Hypocrisy. HYPOCRISY.

Don’t even get me started about John Ensign, the Republican Senator from Nevada, who had an extramarital affair with his former aide’s wife but had no problem voting for the impeachment of Bill Clinton following the Monica Lewinsky scandal, based on “moral” grounds. Hypocrisy.

When it comes to hypocrisy … GOP … “Yeah, you know THEM”

Going “Green” in the Pacific Deep Blue.

There is a certain “coolness” that comes with living around the beach, even if you rarely ever get to enjoy the sound of waves or feel the warmth of the sand in between your toes. As you might have guessed, that would be me.
For most of my life, I have appreciated that “coolness” and have even bragged about it to my unfortunately enclave Mid-Western friends. However it took a group of wonderful students (a special shout out to all the Peer Connection folks) at Pepperdine University to remind me that when you love something, you take care of it!
So when the opportunity came up to volunteer for beach cleaning at Venice Beach, I was definitely a go-er!
Instead of preparing for my Accounting midterm the following Monday, there I was on a beautiful Saturday morning weaving in between sun-bathers and surf aficionados, picking up trash ranging from candy wrappers, feeding bottles, to a pair of boxers! Yes, a pair of boxers! Please ask no further.
Looking at the amount of trash we picked up, one must wonder: What happens to the debris that ends up being carried away by waves and into the Pacific?
This debris, mostly made of plastic, because they are not biodegradable, travels the ocean for thousand of miles, led by various currents (mostly the North Pacific Gyre) into a vortex of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean. This gyre also commonly referred to as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch or Pacific Trash Vortex, is estimated to be twice the size of Texas! No, this is not a typo – TWICE the size of Texas!  Most ironically, many people living on the California coastline have never heard of it before.
To be put in perspective, imagine the entire state of Texas to be a garbage dump. Painful, isn’t it? Now, double that.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch started receiving wider public and scientific attention after its documentation in several articles by Charles Moore, a California-based sea captain and ocean researcher. Mr. Moore discovered the patch of litter while returning home through the North Pacific Gyre after competing in a sailing race.
The debris have had a serious impact on the marine wildlife as the floating plastic particles are often times mistaken for zooplankton and subsequently eaten by jellyfish, turtles, Albatross and other marine birds and animals.
Many efforts, notably led by Richard Owen, a building contractor and scuba dive instructor, have been invested to clean up the Pacific Trash Vortex, but it is obvious that it would take many years before we see a significant reduction in its size.
Not all of us are marine biologists, and I can understand how remotely connected some of us might feel towards the issue – after all, how many of us would have the opportunity to sail across the Pacific on a recycling adventure?
Although few of us might actively participate in cleaning up the Pacific Trash Vortex, we can all contribute in making sure the Great Pacific Garbage Patch does not become thrice the size of Texas. Heck, if we could just do enough to get rid of “Great” I am sure many marine creatures would be extremely thankful.
So next time, you’re on the beach bronzing under the beautiful Californian sun, please don’t forget to properly dispose of your trash and remember to make everyday an “Earth Day.”

Michael Jackson | the man … The King … THE LEGEND

Tribute on Michael Jackson's star on Hollywood Blvd

I had the chance to visit the late Michael Jackson’s star on Hollywood’s walk of fame. The place was swarmed with cameras and fans who had come to show their respect to the King of Pop.

I recorded a little video for the fans of Michael Jackson in the four corners of the world and who could not be in Hollywood to experience his mourning.

The man might be gone but the legend will live on forever!

Woman gives birth to twins. Okay? Boring – With different fathers!

Whaaaat?!?

I don’t know how I missed this, and apparently it’s not the first case of this happening! That just goes on to prove that no matter how much I try to absorb information there’s so much I don’t know! :(

I learned today, I don’t remember where but thanks to Google I was able to find the original story, that a woman in Texas gave birth to twins, each one with his respective father! Allegedly, the woman cheated on her partner with another man resulting in a “one-in-a-million double conception”!

Freaky? Well not really. The reason being when a woman usually ovulates, only one egg makes it out of the ovaries and down in the fallopian tube. On this very lucky day of hers, TWO eggs got to escape from the ovaries, leading to one egg being available for the second fecundation!

Here’s the article as reported on the ny daily news .

I won’t judge.

US Gov’t learns that Democracy can be a Bitch! Ayatollah says “I MF’ing told you so, ya’ll!”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad salutes crowd of supporters.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad salutes crowd of supporters.

This is certainly not what the US Government was expecting!

If Lebanon shuned Hezbollah, why wouldn’t Iran shun Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

The “Obama Effect” as it was dubbed by newscasters from coast to coast apparently had ZERO effect in Iran’s election and all the provinces within its borders. In a country where the majority of the population is less than 30 years old, the Obama administration was certainly hoping his speech in Cairo would have a better impact. I guess not.

Ahmadinejad’s strongest contender, Mir Hossein Mousavi, whose policies were said to be less conservative, is claiming “fraud”. Numerous riots have already broken out in the streets of Tehran.

I can easily predict that this theory of “fraud” will be exponentially blown by the US media. Let me just say one thing if I may, after our elections in 2000, Bush v. Gore for the short term memory folks, the US should be the last country to gauge election frauds or tell another country how to run its voting system. Ok, maybe not last, but you get my point.

With a 62.6% vote majority, Ahmadinejad therefore remains the President of Iran. I can’t help but wonder who Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, the religious leader of the country, voted for! What do you think?

I wish the best to the Iranian people.

How do you know who’s Indigenous to England? “you just look, you just know” … WTF!

Nick Griffin - Head of British National Party

Nick Griffin - welcomed with a healthy dose of freshly hatched eggs, but no shoes! :(

As some of you worldly educated people might know, the E.U. held its parliamentary election over last week-end. I was actually lucky enough to have follow this, well kind of, on British television.

For the first time ever, the far right British party known as the British National Party was able to win 2 seats. The BNP is headed by Nick Griffin, seen above being tossed freshly hatched eggs (Yumm) prompting him to abandon his victory speech.

When asked who could be a BNP member, Mr. Griffin said “people who are indigenous to this country”. The reporter then followed up asking Mr. Griffin how are these indigenous people recognized – ready for Mr. Griffin’s answer? – “you just look, you just know”! —— WHAT THE F…!

Hum … that would exclude about 1/3 of the England football squad.

I just hope no one in France ever comes out with a statement like that. Otherwise the French will lose their football team and would have to ship their 1998 World Cup trophy to Africa!

FYI … DIVERSITY is here to stay, some people like Mr. Griffin might as well start getting use to it.

Church of Scientology to buy California? Tom Cruise as Governor?

As you all know our beloved Golden State is in serious need of gold rocks (well make that cash)! With a $24.6 billion deficit, California’s credit score must certainly be worse than that of a black newborn! (Doh! Bruno this is your fault!)

Oh well …

I was watching, on Hulu of course, a past episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart which aired on 9 June 2009 on which John Hodgman proposed that we sold California to the Church of Scientology!

So I thought, “hum, what if this actually came to be?” – Unlikely? Perhaps – but Bush winning a second election was also unlikely! Okay, I admit that wasn’t a good comparison. :(

But seriously, what would become of California if owned and operated by The Church of Scientology, with Tom Cruise as the Governor?

What’s another option? Legalizing IT … you know, IT … Marijuana!

Legalize and Tax It? :)

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Cristiano Ronaldo – World’s Most Expensive Footballer vs Real Madrid – World’s …. Club

Cristiana Ronaldo stimulating Louis Vuitton's Cash Box!

Cristiana Ronaldo stimulating Louis Vuitton's Cash Box!

Real Madrid has done it again!

After signing Kaka from AC Milan earlier in the week for 60 million pounds, Real Madrid has broken its personal record to acquire the rights of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, with a staggering price tag of 80 million pounds, making him the most expensive footballer of all times!

Cristiano Ronaldo was part of the lack-luster Manchester United losing squad against FC Barcelona in the recent Champions League Final in Rome!

A gifted and young player with many awards in his bag, including Ballon d’Or and FifPro Best Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo was partying it up in Hollywood, CA when the news broke.

La Liga seems to be the league to follow next season!

As an avid Barcelona fan, I am very much interested in seeing how all this Real Madrid will translate on the field. It is clear, Madrid’s president Perez wants to revive the glory days of the “Galacticos” – Zidane, Beckham, and Ronaldo (The Brazilian).

The 6-2 thumping of Real Madrid by Barcelona a few weeks ago was tasty, but would be much tastier next year with 140 million pounds players on the field.

Vamonos Blaugranas!
